The serial number in 4 digits long, and according to information I received from the customer service department of Marathon Boats, this canoe was manufactured sometime prior to 1974. I have purchased the Grumman motor mount, and powered it with a 50# thrust Minkota trolling motor and was very pleased with the performance.

I understand that the new owners proceeded to 'improve' the 19' freighter by reducing the former .050' aluminum hull to .040'. Only in the last several years has Marathon Boat Group been licensed to call them Grummans. Older canoes with a model/serial number plate that says made by Grumman Corp. should be originals and have the thicker hull.

Grumman moved its boat making division to Marathon, New York in 1952. Outboard Marine Corp. bought the division in 1990 and produced the last Grumman-brand canoe in 1996. Shortly thereafter former Grumman executives formed the Marathon Boat Group to produce the canoes.

It was built in Marathon, NY so it was after 1952 when they moved the factory from Long Island and it's the old Grumman serial number format so it's pre 1984 when they adopted the national standardized format. 1538-g-5-17, so from what I've gleaned, it's a 17 footer, made of.05' aluminum, #1538 of batch G.
